Stocks in Bill Gates Portfolio

1. Microsoft

Bill Gates is, of course, the founder of Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), which manufactures and sells software and hardware to businesses and consumers. Some product offerings include operating systems for personal computers, servers, phones, server applications, productivity applications, business solution applications, desktop and server management tools, software development tools, video games, and online advertising.

Microsoft’s fiscal year 2023 net income was $72.36 billion, an increase from 2021. The current stock price is around $329.

The stock is Bill Gates’s most prominent, covering about 31.78% of the portfolio.

2. Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) is a multinational conglomerate holding company. The company is widely known for being managed by Warren Buffett, one of the wealthiest people in the world. Buffett and Gates have forged a close relationship, and Gates served on the Board of Directors until 2020. 

According to Buffett’s 2022 Annual Letter, Berkshire Hathaway owns stocks like Apple, American Express, Coca-Cola, Kraft Heinz, Bank of America, and many more. It also owns subsidiaries like GEICO Insurance, See’s Candies, BNSF, Berkshire Energy, etc. The company had an operating income of almost $31 billion in 2022. Berkshire Hathaway currently has a stock price of over $550,000.

This stock is Bill Gates’ second-largest holding, comprising about 20.38% of the total portfolio.

3. Canadian National Railway Company

Canadian National Railway (CNI) is a rail freight company and related transportation business headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. The company boasts a 20,000-mile network that spans Canada and Mid-America and connects three coasts: the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Gulf of Mexico. The company provides transportation services for the automotive, coal, fertilizer, food and beverages, forest products, grain, metals and minerals, petroleum, and chemical industries.

Canadian National Railway had a net income of CAD 5,118 million in 2022. That was a 29.9% increase from 2021. The company has a stock price of over $111 per share.

CNI is about 15.78% of Bill Gates’ portfolio. In addition, he owns about 7.86% of the total float, making the Gates Foundation the largest shareholder.

4. Waste Management Inc.

Waste Management Inc. (WM) is another holding company where its subsidiaries perform all operations. The services provided include waste collection, transfer, recycling, and disposal.

Waste Management Inc. also developed, operates, and owns waste-to-energy and landfill gas-to-energy facilities in the U.S. The company’s net income in 2022 surpassed the previous year, with a reported net income of $2.238 billion. The current stock price is around $157 per share. 

Gates owns approximately 8.49% of the stock, making him the second largest shareholder, behind Vanguard. Waste Management is his fourth largest holding, constituting about 14.52% of his assets.

5. Caterpillar Inc.

Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) manufactures construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives. The company also designs, develops, engineers, markets, and sells customers’ machinery, engines, financial products, and insurance. 

Caterpillar ranks as a Fortune 100 company as one of the largest companies in the United States based on revenues. In 2022, Caterpillar had a total revenue of $59.427 billion, a 16.6% increase from 2021. The stock currently trades at around $282 per share.

Caterpillar is around 4.30% of the total Bill Gates portfolio, lower than last year as he sells shares.

6. Deere & Company

Deere & Company (DE) manufactures agricultural machinery, heavy equipment, forestry machinery, diesel engines, drivetrains such as axles, transmissions, gearboxes used in heavy equipment, and lawn care equipment. John Deere is the brand name.

In fiscal year 2022, Deere & Company had a net income of $7.131 billion, an increase from 2021. The current stock price is $414.43 per share. 

In 2019, Gates was the largest shareholder of Deere stock but had since transferred $850 million in shares to his former wife, Melinda French Gates. He currently owns about 1.28% of the total float, representing ~3.77% of his holdings.

7. Ecolab

Ecolab (ECL) develops and provides services in technology and systems that specialize in water treatment, purification, cleaning, hygiene, and infection prevention solutions that protect people and their resources. The company serves over 40 diverse industries, such as food production, restaurants, hospitals, paper mills, etc.

In the past, Gates steadily increased his ownership of Ecolab, making it one of the top five most significant holdings in his portfolio as of 2021. But he has since sold shares, reducing its weighting. The firm’s net income in 2022 was $1.092 billion, less than in 2021. The stock price is currently at $182 per share.

Ecolab is Gates’s seventh largest holding at roughly 2.32% of the Gates Foundation portfolio.

8. Coca-Cola FEMSA, S.A.B. de C.V.

Coca-Cola FEMSA, S.A.B. de C.V. (KOF) is a multinational beverage company headquartered in Mexico City. The company is the world’s largest franchise bottler of Coca-Cola products, with operations in much of Latin America, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Central America, Venezuela, and Uruguay.

Coca-Cola FEMSA’s 2022 total revenue was 226,740 million Mexican Pesos, an increase of 16.4% over 2021. The current stock price is around $83 per share.

Also, Bill Gates transferred millions in Coca-Cola FEMSA stock to Melinda as part of their divorce settlement. But he still owns about 1.23% of the stock, lower than in 2021.

9. Walmart

Walmart (WMT) is the largest retailer and grocery store in the United States and is a merchandiser of low-cost consumer products and services. The firm operates grocery stores, supermarkets, hypermarkets, department and discount stores, and neighborhood markets. The company also owns Sam’s Club, the warehouse chain.

In 2022, total revenue was $611,289 million, and net income was $11.68 billion, less than in 2021. The current stock price is around $160 per share. 

Gates has bought and sold shares of Walmart several times, but at 1.13%, it is still the ninth-highest holding in the Bill Gates portfolio.

10. FedEx

FedEx Corporation (FDX) is a significant transportation, e-commerce, and business services company. It operates through FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, and FedEx Services to deliver small packages to freight. It also provides back-office support services to business and retail customers.

FedEx’s 2022 total revenue was $90.155 billion, and net income was $3,966 million. The stock price is currently at around $169.

Bill Gates’s ownership in FedEx is currently worth around $380.37 million or 0.90% of the Foundation’s total portfolio.
